Netflix is shooting a live-action “Scooby-Doo” TV series in Atlanta.
IATSE Local 479, the local union, said the home base for the production is Cinelease Studios in Conyers. Production began in April and runs through Sept. 9. According to Hylton Casting, filming is also taking place in Rutledge and surrounding areas in a summer camp setting.
“Scooby-Doo” debuted as an animated series in 1969 and ran for decades on different networks over the decades. Multiple live-action movies have been produced beginning since 2002.

Netflix first confirmed the series last year on social media, dubbing it a “modern reimagining” that focuses on the gang’s origin story.
The streaming service described the storyline: “During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
On March 18, Netflix announced the main cast:
- Mckenna Grace (“The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” “Regretting You”) will play Daphne Blake.
- Tanner Hagen (“The Pitt,” “Dark Light”) will play Shaggy Rogers.
- Abby Ryder Fortson (“Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret,” “Carousel”) will play Velma Dinkley.
- Maxwell Jenkins (“Lost in Space,” “The Bondsman”) will play Fred Jones.
A week later, actor Paul Walter Hauser was added as a cast regular as Scooby-Doo’s original owner. Hauser previously shot several productions in metro Atlanta including “Cobra Kai,” “I, Tonya,” “Richard Jewell” and “The Naked Gun.”

In June, the rest of the large cast was announced and included notable names such as Sara Gilbert (“Roseanne,” “The Connors”), Sherilyn Fenn (“Twin Peaks”), Bruce McGill (“Animal House,” “MacGyver,” “Rizzoli & Isles”) and Atlantan Wynn Everett (“Chad Powers,” “Sweet Magnolias”).
For the first time in the franchise’s history, the show will use a real Great Dane dog to play Scooby-Doo.
Atlanta has been home to dozens of sequels and reboots over the past 18 years, ranging from “Dumb & Dumber” and “Anchorman,” to “Dynasty” and “MacGyver,” to recent releases such as “Scream 7″ and “Scary Movie 6.”
Production of a new “Superman” film is also happening at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville.
