After ice storms in Georgia prompted school closures Monday, districts began announcing reopening plans for Tuesday.

Atlanta Public Schools, City Schools of Decatur, Cherokee County, Clayton County, Cobb County, DeKalb County, Douglas County, Fayette County, Fulton County, Griffin-Spalding County, Gwinnett County, Henry County, Marietta City Schools, Paulding County and Rockdale County all announced plans to reopen Tuesday.

Additionally, several colleges and universities are resuming classes Tuesday. The University of Georgia will reopen on a delayed schedule. Staff should report at noon, and the first in-person class for students will begin at 1:15 p.m.

Clayton State University, Kennesaw State University, Emory University, Georgia State University and Georgia Tech will resume normal operations Tuesday. The University of North Georgia will operate with an asynchronous virtual learning day for students Tuesday and resume normal operations Wednesday.

Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities are also planning for normal operations Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s and teens in metro Atlanta for at least part of Tuesday. The Gwinnett County School District warned families and staff that patches of ice may still be present in some areas. Marietta City Schools Superintendent Grant Rivera encouraged students in a message Monday to dress warmly as they head to school and to take their time ― late arrivals will be excused. Officials in Clayton County, where the wind chill Tuesday morning could dip into the single digits, told families to expect the weather to affect bus arrival times.

In North Georgia, where icy roads and power outages may persist, public schools in Fannin, Habersham, Hall, Lumpkin, Rabun, Union and White counties will remain closed on Tuesday.

Most school systems in Georgia closed schools Monday in anticipation of dangerous driving conditions and power outages. By Monday afternoon, MARTA was ramping up bus service.

Some school districts held various forms of remote learning Monday.

Students in Rockdale County were expected to log on for live virtual lessons with their teachers via Microsoft Teams. Other districts, like Fulton County, planned for asynchronous learnings days, where students complete assignments on their own time. Fayette County encouraged students to spend time reading and completing assignments given Friday.

Several colleges and universities were also closed or canceled classes Monday. Some of those schools instructed essential staff to report to campus.
