Near-freezing temperatures are expected to greet metro Atlanta revelers Wednesday evening as they celebrate the end of 2025 and the dawn of the new year.
Forecasters predict the temperature will be a brisk 38 degrees as the clock strikes midnight in metro Atlanta, but the wind chill will make it feel closer to 33 degrees. Those headed outside to see Atlanta’s fireworks and drone display should dress warmly and huddle close to a loved one if possible during the festivities.
“For our New Year’s Eve plans, you will still need the heavy coats,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Ashley Kramlich warns.
The record high temperature in Atlanta on New Year’s Eve is 73 degrees, set in 1984, while the lowest is a 26-degree reading from 1917, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Wednesday’s high temp will reach the low 50s, and the day will bring plenty of sunshine before temperatures drop to about 40 degrees by 10 p.m., Kramlich said. The wind speed was about 10 mph Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.
By midnight, officials say the wind chill will make it feel near freezing during the city’s inaugural fireworks and drone display that will be visible to most downtown and Midtown residents. The event replaces the long-running Atlanta Peach Drop at Underground Atlanta.
The drone show begins at 11:45 p.m., and fireworks will follow at midnight. Mayor Andre Dickens urged residents and visitors to observe the celebration from their neighborhood gathering place, backyards or rooftops.
“Atlanta is a city of opportunity for all, and this year we are going to meet you where you are,” he said in a statement this week.
For those still celebrating at 3 a.m., the feels-like temperature will be around 30 degrees, according to the NWS. But don’t worry, the New Year will usher in the warmer weather.
Kramlich said Thursday will be sunny with highs in the upper 50s. By Friday and Saturday, temperatures are projected to be above 60 degrees. Rain is possible for both days.
