Atlanta’s first wind phone finds a permanent home at Oakland Cemetery
A wind phone isn’t a regular phone there’s no dial tone, no one on the line. Yet it offers a powerful way to grieve and process loss. The first wind phone was created in 2010 by Japanese garden designer Itaru Sasaki to speak to his cousin after a cancer loss. Today, hundreds exist worldwide, including Atlanta’s first at the historic Oakland Cemetery, just south of downtown. Experts, including Sascha Demerjian of The Grief House, say using a wind phone can be therapeutic, giving people a quiet space to express emotions, find comfort, and feel connected to loved ones who have passed.
